Barn door opening measurements while the style of barn door you choose will come down to your personal preference you will need to be aware of barn door vs opening dimensions when making your choice.
Barn door height above opening.
Generally most standard barn doors are approximately 36 x 84 or 42 x 80 with enough extra lip to overlap most standard door frames 36 x 80 by an inch or so.
30 opening 34 wide door.
If you replaced an old door with a sliding barn door don t throw it away.
The height is a bit trickier based on the casing and header.
The graphic below simulated a door over the opening.
In order to slide we recommend mounting the door 1 above the finished floor.
And measure from the top of the opening to the floor for height.

I know that people typically extend the header to encompass the full length of the rail.
Standard barn door sizes most barn door sizes fall anywhere between 36 wide on the shorter side by 96 tall on the longer side.
All door openings vary depending on the height of the door and where you want to hang your door.
This will ensure you have room to mount a door guide under the door without friction issues.
How much clearance is needed above the opening.
Again for doorways with moldings measure from the top edge remember the track will be installed a few inches above the opening so you will need to factor that in.
Your door s width should be 2 to 3 inches wider than the door opening and 1 inch higher than the dimensions of your opening.
You can hang your door as high to the ceiling as you want or as close to your opening as you like it is all design preference.
For a sheet rocked opening we recommend the door height be 1 2 larger than the opening.
When closed over the opening the door will cover all of the casing for a cohesive look.
For our standard barn door hardware you need 6 inches of above opening clearance.
For the height of the door measure from the finished floor to the top of the opening or to the top of the casing.
For a standard single door first account for any casing around the opening.
Once hung the door will be another 1 2 off the floor for a total coverage above the door of 1.
You will need a minimum of 6 between the ceiling or crown molding and the top of the door molding or opening for the hardware to mount depending on the style hardware that you choose.
The opening will have full trim with 3 5 side casing and a 5 5 header see pic for an example of another door trimmed the same way.
