42 Cabinets 10 Ceiling

We are mostly concerned with the look vs functionality.

I never know if i m looking at a room with 9 or 10 foot ceilings and i can t tell the difference between 36in and 42in cabinets unless i can count shelves through glass and shelf counting probably isn t the mo. Cost wise this is turning out to be our of our budget to do ceiling height so we priced out 42 inch cabinets. We have 10 ft ceilings in our kitchen and we are wondering if the cabinets should be 42 or 48 high. I just can t figure out ceiling heights and cabinet dimensions from looking at pictures.

A general rule of thumb is for wall cabinets to be mounted so the bottom edge is 54 inches above the floor which means that an 8 foot tall ceiling creates 42 inches of available space for wall cabinets while a 9 foot tall ceiling has 54 available inches. We would appreciate any advice. When it comes to cabinet dimensions most sizes are fairly standard. Our 42 inch cabinets are at 8 feet. If nothing else use crown on both the ceiling and the cabinet when using 42 inch cabinets with a 10 foot ceiling height.

A 42 inch cabinet would touch the top of an 8 foot 96 inch ceiling or might not fit at all if you have soffits crown molding or other ceiling trim installed. We used large molding and height variation to try to fill the extra two feet to the ceiling. We have decided not to take the cabinets to the ceiling. Anything less will look bare.

Alternatively cabinets would extend to a dropdown drywall soffit within the kitchen.
